Explore the outer part of the Hjørundfjord, where no one would think anyone could live

Spelled boarding school

Stavset boarding school and the sleepy village of Trandal.

You get to enter the old boarding school, which was built in 1915 when the days of home schooling were over. The children now had the right to a schoolhouse, but the school road was dangerous. There was no road along the shore, and The schoolchildren from the west side had to walk where there was a danger of avalanches or landslides. The children from the east side had to be transported by boat, which was not very safe either. The Hjørundfjord is known for gusting winds that can overturn small boats. A boarding school made it a little safer, because of the reduced number of trips to and from the school.

‍The old dormitories are still there and bear witness to another era.

A little further in, Standal ferry quay is the next stop. A few times a day there is a ferry to the village of Trandal on the east side of the fjord. Here there is no road connection with the outside world, but there are a few kilometers of village road, and it is nice to explore the village on foot. They learn more about the history of Trandal and what it's like to live in a roadless village. The population of Trandal is actually growing, about 20 people at present. This also includes families with children.

Here we find Christian Gaard Bygdetun, where several music festivals are held every summer and where you can have a bite to eat on the beautiful terrace. Our hike ends here and we are served a tasty lunch.

The standard menu includes venison burgers, dessert and coffee.

After lunch, we stroll back to the ferry and finish the trip.
